ABB Schweiz AG (plant Turgi)

Robot cell for the automatic fastening of traction converters

The Traction division of ABB Schweiz AG develops and designs traction converters and associated electronic components for locomotives, multiple units, trams and buses in local and long-distance transport.

Description

The assembly of the various converters (currently a total of 21 possible variants) was previously largely carried out by hand. The approximately 250 screw connections per assembly were installed by one employee and then checked by a second employee.

Project details

Thanks to the use of a 6-axis robot from ABB (IRB4600-45/2.05) and 6 automatic screwdriving machines including a feeder from Weber, the entire screwdriving rocess has now been automated. In addition, all screwdriving data (tightening torque, screw-in depth, screw-in angle, etc.) is continuously monitored and logged.

The assembly is entered via a 180° turning table using interchangeable workpiece holders, on which the employee positions the assembly elements in 2-4 assembly steps using centring masks and the robot automatically screw them together after turning the table.

All relevant assembly data is displayed to the employee on the ergonomic system panel and any incorrect screw connections are visualised. It is also possible to show the employee the necessary work steps.

The system is designed for a possible expansion with additional input / output point compared to the current turning table.
